Canon EOS R100

  • Canon EOS R100: A Mirrorless Camera for Every Photographer

Canon has recently announced the introduction of the EOS R100 and Powershot V10 in the country, R100 a new camera model that joins the EOS R system lineup. This camera is designed to provide simplicity and ease of use within a smaller, lighter, and more budget-friendly body, while still delivering high-quality images and versatile features.

Simplicity at its Best

The EOS R100 caters to a wide range of photographers, offering a simplified experience for those who prefer a point-and-shoot approach. It incorporates the benefits of the RF mount into a compact and straightforward body, making it ideal for users who value image quality and interchangeable lens flexibility without the complexity of advanced features.

Compact and Lightweight Design

Resembling the EOS R50 in size, the EOS R100 is incredibly lightweight, weighing only around 486g (including battery and SD card) when paired with the RF-S18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens. In fact, it is the lightest camera in Canon’s EOS R system lineup, making it exceptionally portable and convenient for carrying on any photography adventure.

Key Differences and Features

While the EOS R100 shares similarities with the EOS R50, it differs in a few key aspects. The rear LCD monitor on the EOS R100 is fixed, unlike the vari-angle LCD on the EOS R50. Additionally, the hot shoe on the EOS R100 is a traditional 5-pin type instead of the multi-function shoe found on other recent EOS R series models. This makes it compatible with older external flashes, including the affordable Speedlite EL-100, as well as third-party accessories. The camera uses the LP-E17 battery, which is also used by other EOS entry-level models like the EOS 200D II.

Superb Image Quality

Despite its simplified features, the EOS R100 does not compromise on image quality. It benefits from the RF mount’s design, featuring a short back focus distance that enhances image quality and enables greater lens design flexibility. The camera is equipped with a 24.1-megapixel APS-C format image sensor, which is significantly larger than smartphone sensors, allowing for capturing detailed and high-quality images. The DIGIC 8 image processor ensures exceptional noise processing, resulting in clean images with minimal grain even in low-light shooting conditions.

Precise Focus for Everyday Scenes

The EOS R100 incorporates Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a phase detection autofocus system that utilizes every image sensor pixel for both imaging and focus detection. This enables quick and reliable focus acquisition and tracking across almost the entire image area. The camera offers an impressive AF coverage of up to approximately 88% x 100% (horizontal x vertical) of the image area, divided into up to 143 zones. The eye and face detection capabilities ensure accurate and sharp focus on human subjects, even for smaller subjects or those positioned further away from the frame.

Capture the Action

With a burst rate of up to 6.5 frames per second in One Shot AF mode, the EOS R100 allows you to capture fast-moving action with precision and clarity. In Servo AF mode, which continuously tracks moving subjects, the camera shoots up to 3.5 frames per second. The eye-tracking feature ensures that even those fleeting moments and mischievous glints in your subject’s eyes are perfectly focused.

Impressive Video Capabilities

The EOS R100 is not limited to still photography but excels in the world of videography as well. It offers the ability to record 4K UHD videos at 25 frames per second, preserving memories with remarkable detail and clarity. Additionally, you can shoot in Full HD or HD for wider angles of view. The camera also includes a High Frame Rate 120/100p shooting mode in HD, allowing for smooth and immersive slow-motion effects. Vertical videos are automatically tagged with position information, ensuring they play correctly on compatible players and applications. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF’s precise tracking capabilities are available during Full HD/HD recording, ensuring continuous focus on your subjects.

Seamless Connectivity and Easy Sharing

The EOS R100 is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, enabling effortless transfer of images and videos to a paired smartphone using the Camera Connect app. Whether you want to share your work on social media or review and edit your photos on the go, you can easily manage your content without the need for internet connection or wires. The Camera Connect app also allows you to curate and edit RAW files with Creative Assist, providing further flexibility and control over your creative process.

Compact and Powerful Specifications

The Canon EOS R100 boasts a 24.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and weighs approximately 356g (body only), making it the most compact and lightweight camera in Canon’s R system lineup. With a burst rate of up to 6.5 frames per second and the ability to record video in 4K at 25p or HD at 120p, the EOS R100 offers the versatility and freedom to express your creativity.

Designed for Comfort and Control

Drawing on Canon’s extensive experience in crafting quality cameras, the EOS R100 features an ergonomic design with carefully positioned buttons for intuitive operation. The textured grip provides a practical and comfortable feel, ensuring a secure hold while shooting. The high-performance Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with approximately 2.36 million dots allows for easy and accurate composition when capturing images.

Effortless File Transfer and Remote Control

The EOS R100 supports high-speed 2.4 GHz built-in Wi-Fi, enabling quick and wireless file transfers to your smart devices or PC. With Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) support, your files remain secure during wireless transfers. The built-in Bluetooth functionality allows for convenient pairing with iOS or Android phones and supports remote control functionality through the Camera Connect app. Additionally, the camera is compatible with the BR-E1 wireless controller for enhanced control and flexibility.

The Canon EOS R100 combines simplicity, portability, and high-quality imaging to cater to photographers seeking a no-frills yet powerful mirrorless camera. With its compact size, advanced autofocus capabilities, impressive video features, and seamless connectivity, the EOS R100 is a versatile tool that empowers photographers to capture and share their creative vision with ease.

    The Side Tripper

“Make sure you don’t take any side trips,” warns Schumler, from a phrase in the 1993 American film Swing Kids. If you are someone who does not have time to lose, then it is better for you to stick to your main agenda, because there is something about side tripping that submerges the soul in experiences that sometimes make you hope that time would stand still, as the experiences they bring can be more impactful than the main trip itself. It is that free flowing agenda, an unexpected sleepover or a detour that has unintentionally brought pleasant surprises. You can live without it, like you can eat a cake without its icing, but your journey may not be as meaningful. If travel is the ‘best medicine for the heart’,* then for me, side trips are secret ingredients to the most memorable travels and other events that can happen in between or off the main route of one’s itineraries.
