So long, Greenbelt 1

As the news of the impending renovation spread like wildfire, our hearts sank with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation. Greenbelt 1, the cornerstone of one of Makati’s most cherished landmarks, was closing its doors for renovation. For many of us, Greenbelt isn’t just a shopping mall; it’s a communal space where memories are etched into the very fabric of its existence.

For decades, Greenbelt 1 has stood as a testament to Makati’s vibrant culture and dynamic spirit. It’s not merely a place to shop or dine; it’s a destination where families gather, friendships blossom, and love stories unfold.

I remember the countless weekends my family and I spent strolling through its lush gardens, the laughter echoing through its corridors as we shared meals at our favorite spots. Ti Amo Coffee Shop, with its cozy ambiance and aromatic brews, became our post-church haven. And who could forget the old Max’s Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Greenbelt 1 where our parents and in-laws first met, laying the foundation for my future with my wife together?

Greenbelt 1 wasn’t just a place for me. It was a tapestry woven with threads of shared experiences and cherished moments. David’s Tea House tantalized our taste buds with its delectable dim sum, while Big Chill refreshed our palates with its healthy juices. The movie houses provided endless entertainment, The Spa provided much needed body massage, and National Bookstore fueled our literary passions.

But amidst the bittersweet farewell to Greenbelt 1, there lies a glimmer of hope—a promise of something even more beautiful to come. The upcoming renovation, slated for completion in 2028, heralds a new chapter in Greenbelt’s storied history. With features like direct sunlight, skylights, and a rainwater collection system, the revitalized Greenbelt will blend luxury with energy efficiency, embodying the ethos of sustainability and progress.

As we bid adieu to the old, we eagerly await the dawn of the new—a Greenbelt reborn, reimagined, and ready to write a fresh chapter in the annals of Makati’s legacy. Its sprawling gardens and world-class amenities will continue to beckon us, offering an oasis of tranquility amidst the bustling cityscape.

Greenbelt isn’t just a shopping mall—it’s a living, breathing testament to the enduring spirit of community, innovation, and resilience. And as we look to the future with hopeful hearts, we know that the best is yet to come for this beloved icon of Makati.

    The Side Tripper

“Make sure you don’t take any side trips,” warns Schumler, from a phrase in the 1993 American film Swing Kids. If you are someone who does not have time to lose, then it is better for you to stick to your main agenda, because there is something about side tripping that submerges the soul in experiences that sometimes make you hope that time would stand still, as the experiences they bring can be more impactful than the main trip itself. It is that free flowing agenda, an unexpected sleepover or a detour that has unintentionally brought pleasant surprises. You can live without it, like you can eat a cake without its icing, but your journey may not be as meaningful. If travel is the ‘best medicine for the heart’,* then for me, side trips are secret ingredients to the most memorable travels and other events that can happen in between or off the main route of one’s itineraries.
