Chef Laudico Guevarra’s – Waiting for the Party to Happen

Today’s generation is blessed to be in an age of convenience. Everything seems accessible anytime and anywhere. Even when it comes to get-togethers or having parties, for instance, you can call as many family members and friends as you want now and not worry about where to gather, with all the available eating places that abound. That’s why these days, buffets are pretty much in fashion.

I once got invited to a wedding reception which was to be held at Chef Laudico Guevarra’s in P. Guevarra St. in San Juan. I was told that the place would look like an old and restored house, but how it was described to me was an understatement once I actually sat foot at the big property with spacious parking lot and beautiful garden.

The property’s overall sight and fixtures inside it made me recall the 1920s; the black and white era of the movies by Sampaguita Pictures. The venue was perfect for celebrations such as intimate weddings because the view was quite photo-ready, while the buffet restaurant screams “keep calm, get married, and we’ll take care of the food.”

The buffet area presented a wide array of Filipino, Spanish, Japanese and Italian dishes, complete with various starters, fruits, cakes, and other desserts. There were way more choices than what the stomach could accommodate. Imagine having to choose from 6 main stations such as APPETIZERS, MAIN COURSE (Of these, the Angus beef tapa and kare-kare with annatto rice topped my favorites) CARVING STATION, HOT & GRILLED, DESSERTS and BEVERAGES (usual sodas and iced tea,  but I went for sago at gulaman — this could have doubled its role as my dessert as well, if not for the sight of the halo-halo station that I couldn’t resist, so I ended up scooping shaved ice, evaporated milk, sabang saging, sago, pinipig and leche flan).

At the time of this writing, Guevarra’s buffet  price  per person is at P399 (AM)/ P499 (PM) on weekdays and P599 on weekends.  Considering the overall dining experience, I’d say it’s worth every penny and I’m coming back.

    The Side Tripper

“Make sure you don’t take any side trips,” warns Schumler, from a phrase in the 1993 American film Swing Kids. If you are someone who does not have time to lose, then it is better for you to stick to your main agenda, because there is something about side tripping that submerges the soul in experiences that sometimes make you hope that time would stand still, as the experiences they bring can be more impactful than the main trip itself. It is that free flowing agenda, an unexpected sleepover or a detour that has unintentionally brought pleasant surprises. You can live without it, like you can eat a cake without its icing, but your journey may not be as meaningful. If travel is the ‘best medicine for the heart’,* then for me, side trips are secret ingredients to the most memorable travels and other events that can happen in between or off the main route of one’s itineraries. Welcome to Side Tripper, a collection of photographs and blogs about the many side trip adventures of our family and friends. *Source: The Global Commission on Aging and Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, in partnership with the U.S. Travel Association (Los Angeles Times, December 17, 2013 by Chris Erskine)
