The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is taking a greener approach by introducing a new electric vehicle (EV) to gradually replace its older gas-powered fleet vehicles, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption. Partnering with Global Electric Transportation (GET), a provider of EVs equipped with fast-charging lithium-ion batteries, BPI will utilize this new EV to offer free shuttle services for its employees traveling between BPI Buendia Center and MRT Buendia Station.
BPI President and CEO, TG Limcaoco, expressed, “In BPI, we believe that building a sustainable future begins from within ourselves, within the organization. We are excited to roll out a more environment-friendly and sustainable shuttle service for our employees. This forms part of our mission to help build a better Philippines—one family, one community at a time.” The EV has the potential to significantly reduce the Bank’s diesel consumption by 30,000 liters per year, thereby cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40,000 kilograms of CO2 annually.
Freddie Tinga, GET President, remarked, “We are glad to see that more companies are pushing for the use of EVs and starting to realize its positive impact not only on the environment but also on their bottom line. We are happy to partner with BPI and support their sustainability initiatives through our sustainable transport solutions.”
The EV features a spacious design, accommodating up to 30 passengers, compared to traditional shuttles that can only ferry up to 15 passengers at a time. To promote social inclusivity, the EV includes a wheelchair ramp for persons with disabilities (PWDs) to board and alight easily, as well as facilitate boarding for individuals carrying bikes and other wheeled items.
Equipped with an intelligent fleet management system, including GPS tracking, route optimization, and maintenance alerts accessible through the GETPASS App, the EV ensures efficient operation.
This initiative reflects BPI’s commitment to sustainability and ongoing efforts to instill a sustainability mindset within the organization. In recognition of its sustainability endeavors, BPI received numerous awards in 2022 and 2023 from both foreign and Philippine award-giving bodies, including Finance Asia, Global Finance, The Asset, and Asiamoney.
