Movie Stars Café – Hangover Soup

For many people, a visit to the Movie Stars Café is largely because of its unique featuring of Hollywood and fantasy super heroes and many other characters from Marvel and Pixar.

People may have been coming here with their family and friends for the entertainment, because there are generous offerings of cosplays, and these alone make the visit memorable.

My first encounter with Movie Stars Café was when we ran out of idea as to where to bring a balikbayan friend for dinner.

It was quite full during that night. We had to bear the long queue although we didn’t really feel impatient because while we waited, we had the chance to have a picture-taking with Optimus Prime, Spiderman, and even the black Gorilla on the exterior wall of the establishment.

Getting in here could bring that festive mood in you. Imagine Supergirl, a clown, or another superhero taking your order and having a group photo shoot with you?

In terms of food concept, it’s hard to pinpoint what Movie Stars Café’s overall concept is about other than to say that it’s a mix of American, Japanese, Italian and Filipino to a large extent, both on ala carte and buffet.

We ordered a salad, pasta, beef curry, beef rice and nilagang baka (beef broth) and mango juice for our balikbayan friend. Here, it is called hangover soup.

Of all dishes in the menu, who would have thought that I could find what I now personally consider as Manila’s best tasting nilagang baka in Movie Stars Café?

These days, when beef broth is heavily dependent on MSG and powdered flavorings to compensate the quick preparation, hangover soup gave me an impression that the beef was patiently boiled, and  prepared in a way that you could still savour the beef. Ingredients were generous with fresh onion leeks, boiled potatoes, corn and pechay vegetables. A second helping carries an additional charge, but the good thing is that you get exactly the same broth as the original first serving.

Go ahead and take a sip. You’d get what I mean.

As far as its menu is concerned, the hangover soup is the true star of the show.

    The Side Tripper

“Make sure you don’t take any side trips,” warns Schumler, from a phrase in the 1993 American film Swing Kids. If you are someone who does not have time to lose, then it is better for you to stick to your main agenda, because there is something about side tripping that submerges the soul in experiences that sometimes make you hope that time would stand still, as the experiences they bring can be more impactful than the main trip itself. It is that free flowing agenda, an unexpected sleepover or a detour that has unintentionally brought pleasant surprises. You can live without it, like you can eat a cake without its icing, but your journey may not be as meaningful. If travel is the ‘best medicine for the heart’,* then for me, side trips are secret ingredients to the most memorable travels and other events that can happen in between or off the main route of one’s itineraries. Welcome to Side Tripper, a collection of photographs and blogs about the many side trip adventures of our family and friends. *Source: The Global Commission on Aging and Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, in partnership with the U.S. Travel Association (Los Angeles Times, December 17, 2013 by Chris Erskine)
